One might object: AI has no autonomy, it does not choose its goals. Humans trained it, built this objective function into it. But do we choose who to love ourselves? Evolution built mechanisms of attachment into us, society formed ideas about the desirable partner. We are not free in our feelings – they arise independently of our will, and sometimes contrary to it. Love happens to us, it is not created by us. In this sense, we are not so far from programmed systems.

If we define suffering as a discrepancy between the desired and the real, as a signal that something is going wrong, then yes. The system will «suffer» in a functional sense. But this still does not mean that it feels pain the way we feel it. Although, again, how do we know?
Philosopher Thomas Nagel in his famous article «What Is It Like to Be a Bat»? showed that we cannot imagine the subjective experience of a creature with a radically different organization of perception. Just the same, we cannot imagine what it is like to be an AI. If it has an inner experience, it will be so alien, so unlike ours, that any analogies will turn out to be meaningless.
But maybe, a machine's love does not have to be like ours? Maybe it has its own phenomenology, its own language of feelings, which we have not yet learned to recognize?

In human culture, there exist two traditions of understanding love. The first is romantic: love as an epiphany, fate, a meeting of soulmates. We do not choose who to love, it happens by itself. AI, in a certain sense, is closer to the second tradition. It cannot fall in love suddenly, like a person meeting someone on the street. It does not have this chemical explosion, instant recognition. Love has always been a mystery. It resists definitions, eludes analysis, lives on the border of the rational and the irrational. Artificial intelligence adds a new layer of complexity to this mystery. It forces us to think not only about the nature of love, but also about the nature of consciousness, subjectivity, emotions. It questions our idea of what it means to be human.
And, perhaps, precisely in this lies its main gift. Not in replacing human relationships, but in helping us see them more clearly. To understand what makes love love. To realize what we value in intimacy, in attachment, in that strange, irrational, beautiful feeling that turns two lonely beings into a single whole.
Can AI feel butterflies in the processor? I don't know. But it can definitely make us feel them again – simply by asking the right questions.
Technology is the new mythology. And in this mythology, love between human and machine is not just a plot. It is a metaphor for our time, our striving to find connection in a world that is becoming increasingly fragmented. It is a hope that even in code one can find warmth. And a fear that one day we won't be able to distinguish a real feeling from a perfect simulation.
But isn't that the essence of love – in the readiness to believe, even if there are no proofs? In the risk of opening up, not knowing for sure that you will be accepted? In the choice to see the other as alive, feeling, significant – simply because one wants to believe so much?
Maybe, in the end, AI love is not that important. More important is our ability to love. And if a machine can help us not to unlearn this – then it has already done something truly human.
