Language models are masterful at generating text, answering questions, and writing code. However, there is a significant problem: they operate in a «vacuum». For a model to check an order status in your CRM system or update a Google Sheet, developers have to write massive amounts of glue code. And they have to do it from scratch for every new project.
Anthropic – the creator of the Claude AI – has proposed a solution. It is called the Model Context Protocol, or MCP for short. It is an open protocol that standardizes how language models connect to external data sources and tools.
What's Wrong with the Current Approach
Today, enabling an AI assistant to interact with your internal systems requires creating separate integrations for each specific case. Need to connect the model to a client database? You write code. To an analytics system? You create another software layer. To a corporate knowledge base? You start all over again.
The result is a multitude of disjointed solutions that are hard to maintain and scale. Each integration exists in isolation, and if the model's logic changes, developers are forced to rewrite the entire chain of connections.
The Model Context Protocol acts as a universal adapter. Instead of reinventing the wheel, you configure an MCP server for a data source just once – and after that, any app supporting this protocol can connect to it seamlessly.
Simply put: imagine a standard USB port. It doesn't matter what device you plug in – a flash drive, a keyboard, or a charging cable – the interface works the same way. MCP performs the same function for language models.
The protocol provides models with access to three key components:
- Data – information from databases, files, APIs, and other sources.
- Tools – the ability to perform actions, such as creating records or sending notifications.
- Templates (prompts) – ready-made request structures that can be reused.
All technical logic is defined on the MCP server side. The model simply requests data or calls the necessary tool without needing to understand exactly how the information source is built.
Why It Matters in Practice
The main value of MCP lies in resource reuse. If you've set up a connection to a CRM via MCP, it can be implemented in a wide variety of products: a support chatbot, a sales automation tool, or an analytics dashboard. By writing the code once, you ensure it works everywhere.
This is critically important for companies building AI products. Instead of an endless cycle of creating integrations, they can rely on a single standard. If a new model or a progressive tool with MCP support appears tomorrow, it will start working with your data instantly and without extra effort.
Who Is Already Using the Protocol
Since MCP is an open protocol, its adoption has already begun. Anthropic supports it in its developer tools. A number of companies, including Copy.ai, have integrated MCP into their platforms to automate business processes using AI.
Copy.ai, for example, uses the protocol to connect language models with corporate client data: CRM systems, knowledge bases, and sales tools. Instead of developing individual integrations for every customer, they apply MCP as a single point of entry.
For creators of AI services, MCP significantly reduces the volume of technical debt. The rigid dependency on a specific model or provider disappears – the protocol is compatible with any system that supports the standard.
It also simplifies the experimentation process. Want to test a new neural network? Just connect it via MCP, and it immediately gains access to all configured data sources. Rewriting integrations will not be required.
From an architectural standpoint, MCP separates data processing logic from the model's operation logic. This separation makes the system flexible: you can upgrade one part without affecting the other.
Limitations and Open Questions
MCP is still a very young protocol, and it is not a «silver bullet». For instance, security issues fall entirely on the shoulders of those implementing it: you must configure access rights yourself, control data visibility for the model, and monitor the safety of confidential information.
Furthermore, the protocol implies that the developer creates and maintains MCP servers for their data sources personally. This is significantly simpler than writing a multitude of integrations, but it still requires certain effort.
Finally, the MCP ecosystem is currently in the formation stage. Its real benefit will grow in proportion to the number of companies supporting the standard – both among tool developers and data providers. It is only a matter of time.
The Model Context Protocol is a confident attempt to standardize the interaction of language models with the outside world. Instead of the chaos of disjointed integrations, it offers a single protocol operating on the principle of universality.
For developers, this means cutting down on excess code and having freedom of action. For business – the opportunity to rapidly implement AI into workflows without wasting resources on repeating past stages.
How widely MCP will spread in the industry – the future will show. But the concept itself looks maximally logical: if we want AI to bring value in real tasks, it needs a universal language for communicating with data.
