Anthropic and Microsoft have announced an expansion of their partnership. Claude models are now available through Azure AI Foundry — Microsoft's cloud platform for working with AI. In short, developers using Azure infrastructure can access Claude directly without leaving their familiar environment.

What Azure AI Foundry Is and Why It Matters

Azure AI Foundry is a Microsoft platform that brings together various tools for building AI applications under one roof. There, you can work with models and data, set up pipelines, and test and deploy solutions. Essentially, it is a unified environment for developers already using the Azure cloud.

Previously, Claude was available via the Anthropic API and Amazon Bedrock. Now there is another path — through Microsoft. For companies already working in Azure, this means fewer integration headaches: no need to integrate a third-party API separately, set up separate billing, or worry about infrastructure compatibility.

Which Models Are Available

You can use several versions of Claude via Azure AI Foundry:

  • Claude 3.5 Sonnet — the newest and highest-performing model at the time of launch;
  • Claude 3.5 Haiku — a lighter, faster version for tasks that don't require maximum capacity;
  • Claude 3 Opus — the previous-generation model, offering strong accuracy for complex tasks.

They all work through the standard Azure interface, which simplifies switching between models depending on the task. For example, you can use Haiku for quick processing of a high volume of requests and Sonnet for more complex analysis or text generation.

Why Anthropic Is Doing This

Anthropic positions itself as a company focused on AI safety and reliability. However, for organizations to adopt Anthropic's models, they must be available where developers already work. Azure is one of the largest cloud platforms in the world, particularly popular in the enterprise segment.

The partnership with Microsoft gives Anthropic access to this audience. Companies that already use Azure for their workflows can now integrate Claude without needing to rebuild their infrastructure. This is especially important for large enterprises, where changing a vendor or adding a new API is a lengthy process requiring approvals, security checks, and integration.

What This Changes for Developers

If you're a developer already working in Azure, integration becomes simpler. You don't need to register separately with Anthropic, configure API keys, or navigate documentation for yet another service. Everything can be done inside Azure AI Foundry via a single interface.

Furthermore, Azure provides tools for monitoring, logging, and cost management. This means you can use Claude in conjunction with other Azure services — for example, databases, analytics, or automation systems — and all of this will remain within one ecosystem.

Another point: corporate clients often prefer proven platforms where contracts, billing systems, and compliance with security standards are already in place. Azure AI Foundry is exactly such a platform. For many companies, this lowers the barrier to entry.

What About the Competition?

Claude is now available via three major platforms: Anthropic's own API, Amazon Bedrock, and Azure AI Foundry. This is an interesting strategy: instead of relying on a single distribution channel, Anthropic is pursuing maximum accessibility.

OpenAI, by comparison, is tightly integrated with Microsoft yet retains its own API and partnerships with other platforms. Google promotes its models mainly through Google Cloud. Anthropic is choosing a third path: to be present wherever there is demand.

This approach can work if the company maintains the quality of its models and their distinguishing features. For now, Claude stands out due to its long context window (up to 200,000 tokens in some versions) and its emphasis on safety. But the market moves quickly, and competitors aren't standing still.

What's Next

Currently, Claude is available in Azure AI Foundry for clients in regions supported by Microsoft. Over time, availability will likely expand, and new model versions will appear.

For Anthropic, this is another step toward becoming one of the key players in the large language model market. For Microsoft, it is an opportunity to offer Azure clients more choice and to strengthen its cloud platform's position in the AI segment.

For developers, this means greater flexibility: you can choose models not only by quality but also by the convenience of integrating them into existing infrastructure. Ultimately, that flexibility helps accelerate the adoption of new technologies.
