Imagine you need to visualize a huge network of connections – for example, a social network structure, a logistics map, or a dependency scheme in code. The more nodes and connections there are, the longer the computer will take to arrange them into a comprehensible picture. But what if there are tens of thousands of nodes? In that case, the classic approach using a central processing unit (CPU) can take an unreasonably long time.
AMD has published material on how to speed up this process using graphics processing units (GPUs) by leveraging AI as an assistant during the development phase. It's not about the neural network building the graphs itself. The point is that it helps the programmer adapt existing algorithms to the GPU architecture.
Why GPU and Not CPU?
Graph layout is a task requiring the simultaneous processing of many elements: every node interacts with its neighbors, forces of attraction and repulsion are constantly recalculated, and coordinates are updated. Processors handle this sequentially, step by step. GPUs, on the contrary, are tailored for massive parallelism: they are capable of performing thousands of operations simultaneously.
For graphs, this means that instead of recalculating the position of each node one by one, you can process them all practically at once. The result is impressive: what took minutes on a CPU can be done in mere seconds on a GPU.
ROCm (Radeon Open Compute) is AMD's software ecosystem for high-performance computing. Simply put, it's a toolkit that allows complex tasks to be run on AMD video cards in roughly the same way it's done on NVIDIA GPUs via CUDA.
In its blog, AMD shows how to take a ready-made graph layout algorithm (in this case, the Fruchterman-Reingold algorithm, one of the classic visualization methods) and adapt it for execution on a GPU using ROCm.
What Is the Fruchterman-Reingold Algorithm?
In short: it's a physical simulation. Graph nodes behave like like-charged particles – they repel each other. And the connections between nodes work like springs – they attract connected elements. The algorithm iteratively recalculates positions until the graph takes on a visually clear and stable structure.
This method yields excellent aesthetic results but works slowly with large amounts of data. This is exactly where the GPU comes to the rescue.
AI as an Assistant in Code Porting
The most interesting thing about this publication is not so much the acceleration itself, but the approach to development. AMD used a language model (AI assistant) to rewrite code from a CPU version to a GPU-oriented one.
Usually, this requires a deep understanding of the specifics of programming for graphics processors: distributing calculations across cores, managing memory, and eliminating «bottlenecks». This isn't «rocket science», but it's not a five-minute task either. AI, however, trained on colossal datasets, can offer a ready-made working implementation, significantly saving the programmer's time.
In this example, the model helped adapt the algorithm for ROCm and HIP (an application programming interface similar to CUDA, but cross-platform). The developer asked clarifying questions, and the AI generated code, which was then tested and refined manually.
How Effective Is It?
The numbers confirm the success: for a graph with tens of thousands of nodes, the GPU version proved to be many times faster than the CPU variant. This doesn't mean the AI produced perfect code on the first try; however, it substantially accelerated the program writing process.
An important nuance: AI does not replace an understanding of the architecture. It helps quickly create a working prototype, but final optimization and verification of correctness still remain a human task.

AMD presented a working example of how offloading calculations to the GPU accelerates graph visualization and how AI facilitates this transition. This isn't a revolution, but a high-quality case study illustrating two important trends: the growing accessibility of computing on alternative GPUs and the strengthening role of AI assistants in the industry.
