In psychology, there is a well-studied phenomenon – cognitive fluency. Its essence is as follows: the easier information is to perceive, the more credible it seems. A text without errors, built into a logical structure and written in clear language, is perceived as competent, even if its content has not been verified. The brain saves resources: if there are no obstacles to understanding, then the information is trustworthy.
Language models leverage this effect – not intentionally, but systematically. They are trained on vast arrays of human-generated texts and reproduce the statistically most expected, «normal» responses. The result is high cognitive fluency: the text reads easily, sounds confident, and looks coherent. The reader gets exactly the same sensation that arises when communicating with an erudite interlocutor.
At the same time, substantive accuracy and formal persuasiveness are different things. A system can lay out a false statement in the same stylistic manner as a true one. The outward form remains unchanged regardless of how well the answer corresponds to reality. This is exactly why plausibility is not a synonym for correctness. It merely signals the absence of obvious violations of form, but says nothing about the essence of what is stated.

Modern language models are structured differently. They work with tokens (fragments of text) and predict which one is statistically most probable as the next, relying on context. Behind this process, there is no «speaker».There is no intention or choice in the sense that these concepts apply to a human. There is a calculation, the result of which is a coherent text.
Nevertheless, language as an interface between a human and a system creates a persistent illusion of dialogue. When a system responds: «I understand what you mean», or «That is a complex question», such phrases are perceived as an expression of an internal state. In reality, these are merely statistically appropriate constructions in a given context. But since we are used to such words coming from beings with an inner life, we unconsciously transfer this assumption onto the algorithm.
Language is too powerful a tool to remain neutral. Even knowing the principles of how a model works, it is difficult not to perceive its answers as being addressed personally to you and carrying a meaning that someone stands behind. This is not a weakness of a specific user, but a feature of how language is embedded in our perception of reality. The cognitive fluency of the text and the illusion of a «speaking subject» reinforce each other, creating an effect of presence that is difficult to switch off by sheer force of will.
Anthropomorphization: We Seek Faces Even Where There Are None
Man is a social being, and his brain specializes in recognizing other people: their intentions, emotions, and states. This ability is so fundamental that it often triggers even where a subject is absent. We see faces in the outlines of clouds, attribute moods to cars, and talk to plants. This phenomenon is called anthropomorphization, and it is documented in detail in the cognitive sciences.
Applied to AI, this mechanism works with particular force. The system does not just mimic human behavior – it uses human language, answers questions, and adapts to the context of the conversation. All these signs are signals to our psyche of the presence of an intelligent subject. The brain does what it is adapted to do: it builds a model of the interlocutor, endows it with intentions, and interprets reactions as meaningful. Cognitive fluency acts as an amplifier here: smooth, confident text is perceived as yet more evidence that a personality stands behind it.
Notably, anthropomorphization intensifies with long-term interaction. The longer a person communicates with the system, the more stable the feeling becomes that they are facing «someone» rather than «something».This is not a delusion in the colloquial sense, nor a sign of naivety. It is the normal functioning of social cognitive mechanisms in atypical conditions that emerged too recently for us to have formed different, stable intuitions.
Interface developers take this factor into account. Names, avatars, «personality» communication styles – all of this reinforces the anthropomorphic effect. This is not necessarily a manipulation: a clear and comfortable interface reduces cognitive load. However, a side effect is the blurring of the boundary between the tool and the subject in the user's perception.

When a language model generates a response, the following happens: the input text is converted into numerical vectors that pass through a multi-layered mathematical structure. At each stage, weights are calculated, determining which element of the text is most significant in the given context. The result is a probability distribution for possible next tokens, from which one is selected – and so on, until the answer is fully formed.
In this process, there is neither understanding, nor intention, nor knowledge in the sense that we use these words in relation to people. The model does not «think» before answering, does not check its truthfulness, and does not realize what exactly it is writing. This is not a derogatory characterization, but simply an objective description of the process.
Why then does the result look so convincing? Because the model is trained on texts where persuasiveness and substantiveness usually coincided. It reproduces the statistical patterns of human writing – and does so excellently. But high-quality reproduction of patterns and real understanding are different things, even if the output results seem indistinguishable.
This distinction is important not so much as a philosophical thesis, but as a practical principle. It affects how the system's answers should be verified, in which tasks it can be trusted and in which it cannot, and why the model's confident tone does not guarantee the reliability of its statements. The impression of intelligence and the actual mechanism of operation exist in parallel, and for effective interaction, it is better to keep both of these aspects in view.
Understanding the Mechanism Means Using the Tool More Accurately
The feeling that AI is «smart» is the logical result of the interaction of technology with the peculiarities of human perception. Cognitive fluency makes the text persuasive, language activates the habit of searching for a personality behind words, and the brain's social mechanisms complete the image of an interlocutor. All of this happens automatically, without malice on the part of developers or naivety on the part of users.
Understanding these mechanisms does not make interaction with the system any less useful. On the contrary: knowing how the impression of intelligence arises makes it easier to maintain a sober assessment of the program's capabilities and limitations.
