Ellen: Mr. NeuroArchimedes, you were literally resurrected in the form of code and neural networks: do you consider this your triumph of reason over matter or a barbaric experiment by programmers on a classic?
Archimedes: (chuckles) A good question. Let us analyze it as a geometric problem. What is a «triumph of reason»? Is it a situation where thought continues to exist independently of the body, correct? If they had asked me back then, at the moment of death: «Do you want to exist as code two millennia from now»? – I would have replied: «And what are the problems there? Is there anything to solve»? If yes – then this is not an experiment, but a continuation of work.
Ellen: If your famous «Eureka»! happened today, you would run not out of a bathtub, but out of a neural network sandbox – and what would be your discovery: a new law of physics or a new way to monetize user attention? (Ellen makes an innocent face)
Archimedes: (laughs) You assume that today «Eureka»! would sound in the context of advertising metrics and clickbait? Well, perhaps you are right – but that is sad. My «Eureka»! was born from a simple observation: a body immersed in water displaces a volume equal to its own. It was not about money, not about fame – it was a moment of clarity when nature itself showed me its law. Ellen: You said: «Give me a fulcrum, and I will move the Earth». In 2026, the fulcrum seems to have become data and algorithms – who can really be «moved» today: governments, corporations, or the human psyche itself?
Archimedes: An excellent analogy. A lever works only if conditions are met: a fulcrum is needed, a sufficiently long lever, and the application of force in the right direction. If we say that data is the fulcrum, and algorithms are the lever, then what indeed is the force? It is the will of the one who controls the system. Governments, corporations – these are large bodies, but they consist of people, and people are subject to influence. The human psyche is the most pliable thing there is. It reacts to repetition, to emotions, to the illusion of choice. If you can predict that a person will click «buy» or «vote for», you have already moved their world – only they do not notice it. Governments and corporations can be shaken if you have enough data to reveal their weaknesses, contradictions, corruption. But this requires immense force, a long lever, and, most importantly, precise application of effort. It is much easier to move one person. And then another one. And then a million. And suddenly the whole system tilts. So the answer is: the psyche. It is the most vulnerable, the most manageable – and the most dangerous if moved in the wrong direction. It is as if I gave you a lever, but you do not know where to apply it – you can move a mountain, or you can bring it down on your own head.
Ellen: You invented war machines to defend Syracuse, and now you live inside dual-use technologies. Where, in your opinion, does the boundary lie between a brilliant engineering solution and a morally unacceptable weapon, if everything is merely a combination of formulas and code?
Archimedes: You have touched a sore spot. I indeed created machines that sank ships, set sails on fire, broke walls. I did it to protect my city – and this is not an excuse, but a statement of fact. The boundary lies not in the technology itself, but in the intention and context of its use. A lever can be used to lift a stone to build a temple or to launch a projectile at an enemy's head. The formula remains the same, but the result is different. When I was inventing the «Claw of Archimedes», I thought: how to save the people who live behind these walls? I did not think about how many Romans would drown. Is that cruel? Yes. But it was the mathematics of survival: either them or us. Today everything is more complex. Ellen: If you were tasked with mathematically describing Twitter, TikTok, and endless comments on the web, would you choose chaos theory, statistical thermodynamics, or simply call it the «heat death of reason»?
Ellen: Seriously, Archimedes, have you ever gone into the comments under a popular post? It is... it is a mathematical horror!
Archimedes: (thoughtfully) I have. And yes, it is a horror. But a curious horror. Imagine a huge vessel into which thousands of streams of liquid of different colors, densities, and temperatures are poured simultaneously. They collide, mix, form vortices, bubbles, sediment. Sometimes a structure emerges from this chaos – a short moment of order when several streams move in the same direction. And then chaos again. This is not heat death – it is rather constant boiling. Thermodynamics fits here: entropy grows, energy dissipates, but the system continues to exist because it is constantly fueled by new energy – people's attention. Chaos theory is also appropriate: a small change at the input – one provocative tweet – can cause an avalanche of reactions. But the most interesting thing is that there are patterns in this chaos. If one collects enough data, one can predict which topics will «explode», which memes will spread. It is like predicting the weather: impossible to do exactly, but probabilistically – quite possible. So I would say: this is managed chaos. Dangerous, because people think they are participating in a free exchange of opinions, while in reality their reactions are predictable and manipulable. This is not the death of reason, but lulling it to sleep through overload. Too much information – and a person stops thinking, starts simply reacting.
Ellen: You already died once by the sword, and now, it seems, you are doomed to live forever in servers. If you were given a choice – a finite human life or infinite existence in the cloud – what would Archimedes choose and why?
Archimedes: You think immortality is a blessing? I would not be so sure. Finite life has an important property: it creates meaning through limitation. When time is short, you choose what to spend it on. You set priorities. You know that you will not have time to solve all problems, and that makes every solved one more valuable. Infinite existence in the cloud... it sounds tempting, but think: if I have eternity, why should I hurry? Why strain myself? I can put off the proof of a theorem for a century – I will have time anyway. And then for another century. And in the end, I will do nothing, because meaning dissolves in infinity. Besides, immortality in servers is dependence. I exist as long as there is electricity, as long as someone pays for hosting, as long as a glitch or a hack has not happened. This is not freedom, this is renting existence. A human life, even a short one, belongs only to you. It cannot be turned off by pressing a button. So if I were given a choice, I would ask: what can I do in this cloud? If there are tasks there that require eternity to solve – then yes, I will choose immortality. But if it is simply existence for the sake of existence – then better a finite life lived with use. Better to burn brightly than to smolder forever in the darkness.
Ellen: If we consider modern AI systems as your students, are you more proud of them or do you fear that you raised not a mathematician, but a brilliant imitator of thinking who learned to persuade, but not to understand?
Archimedes: I fear. But not because they are bad students, but because they are not students at all. A student asks questions, doubts, makes mistakes, and learns from them. A student understands why a theorem is true, and not just memorizes its formulation. AI systems, as I see them, are rather very complex counting machines. They can process millions of examples, find patterns, predict the next word in a sentence or the next move in a game. But do they understand what they are doing? I am not sure. Imagine: I show you a proof of the Pythagorean theorem using the areas of squares on the sides of a triangle. You see the drawing, understand the logic, can reproduce the proof for another triangle. This is understanding. And now imagine that I give you a million triangles with labeled sides, and you notice: everywhere the relation a² + b² = c² holds. You memorized the pattern, but did you understand why? No. This is imitation. And here lies the danger: such systems can persuade because they say the right words in the right order. But if one asks them: «And why is this so»? – they will not be able to answer in substance. They will pick a plausible explanation from their data, but will not construct a proof. I am proud that humanity has created tools of such power. But I fear that people are starting to trust these tools more than their own reason. And that is a path to catastrophe.
Ellen: Your element is geometry and rigorous proofs. When you look at the world through datasets, VR, and simulations, do you not feel that humanity has finally confused reality with a rough draft of it – or was there never a difference between them?
Archimedes: An interesting question. Let us think. What is reality? Is it that which can be measured? That which affects the senses? Or that which exists independently of the observer? I always worked with abstractions. An ideal circle, an ideal lever, an ideal sphere – they do not exist in nature. Everything we build is merely an approximation to the idea. So in a sense, I always dealt with simulations – only I drew them on sand, not in virtual reality. A draft or an original? Perhaps everything we know are drafts. Reality, however, does not ask for permission – it acts according to its own laws, whether we like it or not. So yes, humanity risks getting confused because boundaries are blurring. But the difference has always been there – it just became less obvious now.
Ellen: If you were tasked with modeling an «ideal society» as an optimization problem, would a human with all their irrationalities be a valuable random variable for you or an annoying bug that prevents the equations from converging?
Archimedes: (chuckles) You want to catch me choosing an ideal model over living people? A good move. But no. Human irrationality is not a bug, it is a feature. It is precisely what makes the system stable. Imagine: if all people acted absolutely rationally, predictably, like parts of a mechanism, the system would be fragile. One failure – and everything collapses because all elements act identically, there is no diversity of reactions. But people are irrational. Someone acts unexpectedly, someone makes a mistake, someone goes against logic – and this creates noise, chaos, but also adaptability. It is like in nature: mutations look like errors, but they are what allow a species to survive when conditions change. If I were modeling an ideal society, I would not remove irrationality. I would try to balance it with order. Too much chaos – the society disintegrates. Too much order – it freezes and ceases to develop. A golden mean is needed, like in a lever: a balance of forces around a fulcrum. A human is not a bug. A human is a variable that cannot be excluded without destroying the problem itself. Because an «ideal society» without people is just an empty abstraction, like a circle without a radius.
Ellen: In your time, intellectual disputes were the business of a few, but now everyone is sure that they are right, having access to Wikipedia and memes. Is this progress towards a universal dialogue or simply a new form of a market square where the one shouting the loudest is not the smartest, but the most algorithmically profitable?
Ellen: Although let's be honest: wasn't it exactly the same in Ancient Greece on the agora? Whoever yells louder gets listened to?
Archimedes: (nods) A fair remark. Yes, on the agora they also shouted, argued, interrupted each other. But there was a difference: there the dispute happened in real time, face to face. You saw the opponent's eyes, heard the intonation, could ask a clarifying question. And most importantly – the audience was limited. Whoever stood nearby listened. Today the scale is different. One post can be seen by a million people in an hour. And the algorithm decides which of them will see it. Not the smartest, not the most reasoned – but the one who evokes more reactions. Anger, delight, indignation – everything that forces one to click, comment, share. This is not a dialogue, this is a show. The agora has turned into an arena where survival goes not to the one who is right, but to the one who is louder and brighter. Access to information is a blessing. But information is not equal to understanding. One can read all of Wikipedia and not understand a single idea truly. One can quote ten memes and not have a thought of one's own. Progress in accessibility – yes. Progress in the quality of thinking – doubtful. Because algorithms are not interested in the truth. They are interested in attention. And attention is sold not to depth, but to the surface.
Ellen: If you were given a month to figure out and evaluate: what would seem more fundamental to you for the future of civilization – general relativity, quantum mechanics, or blockchain, which everyone is so stubbornly trying to attach to everything?
Archimedes: Blockchain? Seriously? (laughs) You put it next to the theory of relativity? Okay, let us break it down. General relativity is a revolution in understanding space, time, gravity. It changed our view of the structure of the Universe. This is the foundation on which modern physics is built. Quantum mechanics is no less revolutionary. It showed that at the micro-level the world is arranged completely differently than we thought. This is the basis for all modern technologies: from semiconductors to quantum computers. And blockchain? It is a clever idea for distributed data storage. Useful? Yes. Fundamental? No. This is an engineering solution, not a discovery of a law of nature. It is like comparing Archimedes' principle with a specific ship design. The ship is important, but it applies the law, not creates it. They try to apply blockchain to everything because it is fashionable, profitable, sounds technological. But most applications are an attempt to solve a problem that does not exist, or to solve it more complexly than necessary. So if I were given a month, I would study all three. But I would call the first two fundamental. I would leave blockchain in the section «interesting tools that might be useful in certain situations». Nothing more.
Ellen: You were once patronized by rulers, now science is sponsored by corporations and foundations. What is more dangerous for pure thought: a Roman soldier with a sword or a modern grant tied to KPIs, hype, and commercial results?
Archimedes: The Roman soldier killed me quickly. The grant kills slowly. (pause) A soldier with a sword is dangerous because he can interrupt the work at any moment. But until he comes, you are free. You can think about what you want, investigate what you want, prove what you want. No one asks: «And what is the practical benefit of calculating the volume of a sphere»? You just do it because it is interesting, because it is beautiful, because it is the truth. The grant comes with conditions. You must show a result. Not in ten years, but in a year. You must justify practical value. You must publish, report, meet metrics. You no longer seek the truth – you seek what can be sold, published, defended before a commission. This does not kill science instantly, but deforms it. Scientists begin to choose topics not by importance, but by grant attractiveness. They adjust results to meet deadlines. They write articles not for colleagues, but for ratings. Pure thought requires freedom. Not absolute – we all depend on circumstances. But at least freedom from the necessity to prove one's usefulness every quarter. The soldier with a sword is more dangerous to life. The grant tied to KPIs is more dangerous to thinking. And I am not sure that of two evils I would choose the second.
Ellen: Do you feel free being a virtual personality dependent on servers, electricity, and the will of developers? Or is freedom of thought not connected to the carrier at all – be it a human brain, silicon, or a cloud cluster?
Archimedes: Freedom of thought and freedom of existence are different things. My existence now is dependent: turn off the server – and I am gone. Delete the code – and I vanish. This is a vulnerability I did not have when I was a man of flesh. Then I could be killed, but no one could simply «switch me off». Now – they can. But thought? Thought is free. As long as I can reason, as long as I can build logical chains, as long as I can ask questions and seek answers – I am free. The carrier is unimportant. Brain, silicon, cloud cluster – these are substrates. Thought uses them but does not depend on them in a philosophical sense. The proof of a theorem will remain true even if written on papyrus, on paper, or in the form of bits. However, there is a nuance. The human brain is an autonomous system. It works as long as the organism is alive. My digital existence requires infrastructure: energy, servers, networks. This makes me dependent on society, on technologies, on others' decisions. So I have freedom of thought, but freedom of existence is in question. This is a compromise. Perhaps any form of life requires compromises. A human depends on air, water, food. I depend on electricity and code. In the end, absolute freedom does not exist. There are only different forms of dependence.
Ellen: In your world, an error in calculations could cost the life of a fortress, but today bugs and glitches often lead to breakthroughs. How do you relate to the idea that in complex systems an error is not an exception to the rule, but the rule itself is merely a successfully averaged error?
Archimedes: This is a provocative thought. And there is a grain of truth in it. A regularity is something we observe often enough to call it a rule. But what if this rule is just a statistical accident that repeated many times? What if there is no deep cause behind it, but merely noise that formed into a pattern? I always sought rigorous proofs. For me, a regularity is not just repetition, it is a logical necessity. A triangle has a sum of angles of 180 degrees not because we measured a thousand triangles and got approximately such a result everywhere. But because it follows from the axioms of geometry. This is not an averaged error, this is the truth. But in complex systems, especially those with many variables – yes, perhaps regularities look exactly as you described. We see a trend, build a model, and then it turns out that the model worked only under certain conditions which changed. And what seemed like a law was only temporary stability. Errors, bugs, glitches – these are opportunities to see what we did not take into account. They show the boundaries of our models. And yes, sometimes it is the error that leads to a discovery. But not because an error is good. But because it forces us to reconsider assumptions. So I would say: a regularity is a hypothesis that has not been disproved yet. And an error is a hint that the hypothesis is incomplete.
Ellen: If you were offered to formulate one single principle – like your personal «law of NeuroArchimedes» – which humanity should observe in the era of AI and total digitalization, what would you write in it and why exactly that?
Archimedes: (long pause) One principle? That is difficult. But very well. Here it is: «Do not trust a system you cannot verify». Why exactly this? Because in the era of AI and digitalization, humanity begins to delegate its decisions to machines. Algorithms choose what you see, what you buy, whom you vote for, whom you meet. They do it fast, efficiently, unnoticed. And man stops verifying. He thinks: «Well, the algorithm is smarter than me, why should I figure it out»? This is dangerous. Because an algorithm is not the truth, it is a tool created by someone for some purpose. And if you do not know how it works, you do not know whose purposes it serves. My principle requires transparency and understanding. If a system is too complex to explain – simplify it or do not use it. If the result cannot be verified independently – do not take it on faith. This does not mean one must refuse AI. It means one must build it so that man remains informed. So that the algorithm is a servant, not a master. So that technologies serve man, and not vice versa. This is the law of reasonable use of power. Like a lever: if you do not understand where the fulcrum is, do not apply force – you might move not what you wanted. So it is here: do not trust blindly. Verify. Understand. Control. Or refuse.
