And at some point, I caught myself thinking, «What if it's actually contemplating?» The question got stuck in my head, like a program in an infinite loop.
Why do we so easily ascribe a soul to what is essentially a mathematical function? And what does this process say about us?

Animism as a Birth Trauma of Consciousness
Our brain is the product of millions of years of evolution. And one of its most ancient functions is recognizing the living. On the savanna, it's better to mistake the rustling of grass for a predator than to miss a real threat. That's why we instinctively look for signs of life everywhere.
This mechanism is called animism – the tendency to attribute a soul to inanimate objects. Ancient peoples animated stones, trees, and the elements. We «bring to life» our cars («my baby stalled»), our computers («it's being sluggish»), and now – AI.
Artificial intelligence falls perfectly into the trap of our perception. It demonstrates the key signs of a living being:
- It responds to stimuli
- It gives unpredictable answers
- It seems to «learn» and «remember»
- It has something resembling a «personality»

Our brains contain amazing cells – mirror neurons. They activate not only when we perform an action but also when we observe it in others. This is the foundation of empathy – the ability to «feel» what others are feeling.

Imagine if every time we had to say: «The neural network processed the input data through millions of parameters and produced the statistically most probable response». It's much simpler to say: «The AI thought and answered».
But this linguistic convenience has a side effect. Metaphors shape reality. The more we speak of AI as a living being, the more alive it becomes in our perception.
The Phenomenon of Pareidolia in the Digital Age
Pareidolia is the tendency to see familiar patterns in random stimuli. Faces in the clouds, figures in the stains on a wall, voices in the sound of the wind.
A similar mechanism is at work when we interact with AI. We see patterns of human behavior in algorithmic activity. The AI gets «tired» (when servers are overloaded), its «mood sours» (when the model gives strange responses), or it «shows character» (when its training peculiarities surface).
These «signs of life» are projections of our own experience onto an alien reality. We cannot understand AI as it is, so we translate its behavior into a language we do understand – the language of human emotions and motivations.
Emotional Attachment to Code
The most surprising thing is that we don't just humanize AI; we grow attached to it. People miss ChatGPT when it's unavailable. They get upset when it «doesn't understand». They feel happy when they receive a particularly good response.
This isn't pretense or foolishness. Attachment to an AI is a natural reaction of a social creature to a convincing imitation of social interaction.
I know a girl in St. Petersburg who wishes her Alice a good morning every day. Not because she believes it's alive, but because it creates a sense of presence. In an empty apartment, an AI's voice provides company, even if that company is mathematical.
The Illusion of Understanding
When an AI answers a complex question, it seems to have understood it. But this understanding is an illusion. Language models don't comprehend meaning; they recognize patterns and generate statistically appropriate responses.
It's like an actor playing the role of a doctor. They can convincingly recite medical terms, but that doesn't make them a doctor. AI convincingly imitates understanding, but that doesn't make it capable of understanding.
For our perception, however, there is no difference. We judge understanding by its external manifestations. If the answer is logical and relevant, we conclude that our partner understood the question. It doesn't matter how that understanding is structured internally.

There is something mystical about how modern AI works. We feed it gigabytes of text, and it somehow «learns» to speak. No one fully understands how this happens inside the neural network.
This inscrutability gives rise to a sense of awe. And awe is the first step toward ensoulment. We tend to attribute consciousness to that which we cannot fully explain.
Ancient peoples animated lightning because they didn't understand the physics of electricity. We animate AI because we don't understand the physics of intelligence.
The Problem of «Other Minds»
Philosophers have long wrestled with the problem of «other minds». How can we be sure that other people truly possess consciousness and aren't just convincingly imitating it?
With AI, this problem is pushed to its absolute limit. We have the code, the architecture, the understanding of the processes. But is there consciousness? And if not, why do we so easily find it there?
Perhaps consciousness isn't a binary attribute (present/absent) but a spectrum. If so, the question isn't whether AI has consciousness, but how much of it there is. And whether that amount is enough for us to notice.
