When it comes to security in the AI world, discussions most often revolve around data protection or the ethics of model application. However, there is another aspect the general public hears about less often: how to safely store and transfer model weights themselves – that is, the 'knowledge' a model accumulates during training. This is precisely what the Safetensors story is all about.
In short, Safetensors is a file format for storing neural network weights. It might sound like a technical detail, but it addresses a real problem.
For a long time, it was common practice in the community to save and load models using formats not originally designed with security in mind. Simply put, a model weights file could execute arbitrary code upon loading, opening the door for attacks. Imagine downloading a model file, and upon opening, it stealthily runs something malicious on your computer. At the PyTorch Conference EU in Paris, held on April 8, 2026, the PyTorch Foundation announced the adoption of Safetensors as an official contributed project of the foundation.
This is not just a symbolic gesture. The PyTorch Foundation is one of the key organizations in the AI ecosystem, uniting major companies and research institutions. When such a foundation takes a project “under its wing,” it signifies structured support: governance, transparent development, community involvement, and a higher level of trust from the industry.
It is significant that this happened amidst the rapid growth of agentic systems – AI solutions where models don't just answer questions but independently perform tasks, interact with tools, and with each other. The more autonomous these systems become, the more critical it is to trust each of their components. And the format in which the model itself is stored and transferred is one such component.
The Agentic Context: Why Weight Security is Becoming Critical
Today, more and more AI systems are being built on an agentic principle: multiple models work together, pass tasks to one another, use external tools, and manage files and browsers. In such chains, each model is a potential entry point for an attacker.
If a model is loaded from an untrusted source in an insecure format, it can become an attack vector for the entire system. Safetensors solves this very problem at the format level: regardless of where the file came from, it cannot “do something extra” upon loading.

The format is already widely used in the ecosystem: it is supported by major platforms for storing and distributing models, as well as many popular tools for working with neural networks. Now, this development will take place within a framework of open governance and community participation.
Open Questions
Adopting Safetensors into the foundation is a positive step, but it is not the final solution to all security problems in AI. The format protects against one class of threats – code execution when loading weights. However, the security of agentic systems is much broader: it includes issues of model source verification, data integrity, access control, and much more.
So, Safetensors joining the PyTorch Foundation is more a part of a longer journey than its destination. But it's an important part: it signals that the industry is starting to think systemically about security, not just at the application level, but at the level of the models themselves.
