Consider a few examples. A legal document contains standard phrasing that a language model reproduces correctly. However, assessing how well these phrases fit a specific situation with its unique history, the relationship between the parties, and potential consequences – that is a different task entirely. A medical algorithm may confidently correlate symptoms with a diagnosis based on statistics, but a patient is a human being with their own history, anxieties, and priorities. A consultation is more than just matching signs.

Context in these cases does not lend itself to full formalization. It cannot be entirely converted into a training dataset. This does not mean that AI is useless in such fields – it often helps in solving individual subtasks. However, fully delegating a task to a model here involves substantive losses.

A language model can mimic understanding by providing a response that looks appropriate. But behind this, there is no reconstruction of meaning – only the selection of the most probable next token. In most standard situations, this is enough. However, in cases where the precise interpretation of intent is fundamental (for example, in risk assessment, conflict resolution, or mediation), it is insufficient.

Causal reasoning and the interpretation of intent are not functions that modern models «lack».They represent a fundamentally different type of information processing.

A rare disease, an atypical emergency, an unusual legal collision – for all these scenarios, the model has little historical data. It either tries to apply the closest known patterns or produces an uncertain result.

The problem is compounded by the fact that models do not always signal their own uncertainty in a clear way. An outwardly convincing answer may be the result of interpolation between poorly fitting examples. The user, in turn, is not always able to distinguish a high-quality result from a plausible guess.

Unique cases require reasoning based on principles rather than searching for the nearest pattern. This is a qualitatively different operation.

A practical conclusion follows from everything described above, which is important to state explicitly.

AI systems do not bear responsibility. Not because their creators evade it, but because responsibility presupposes agency, which these systems do not possess. A model does not «make decisions» in the human sense of the word. It generates output based on input, and the consequences of that data remain the human's concern.

This is especially significant in areas that affect people's lives: in making diagnoses, legal conclusions, social assessments, or high-stakes management decisions. In such cases, AI can be a useful analytical tool, but handing over the final decision to it means excluding the person who bears responsibility for it from the process.

This limitation cannot be bypassed by increasing accuracy. Even a perfect model can make a mistake in a specific instance. The human in this chain is not a redundant function. They are a subject who recognizes the consequences and can account for factors that did not make it into the data.

Well-designed systems assume that the human is substantively involved in the decision-making process. Not for a formal signature on the algorithm's output, but to evaluate that output from a position that a machine is incapable of occupying.

A Tool in the Context of Its Capabilities

AI is a powerful tool. This statement requires no caveats if one understands exactly what makes it effective: the ability to detect patterns in big data, scale routine operations, and work within the framework of formalized tasks.

The limitations described in this material do not devalue the technology but clarify its role. Difficulties with contextual nuances, the absence of causal reasoning, vulnerability to rare cases, and the lack of agency – all of these are not temporary flaws but a consequence of how statistical models are built.

Where a task is clearly defined, data is sufficient, and the cost of error is not critical, AI works effectively, often surpassing humans in speed. However, where understanding meanings, interpreting intentions, or making responsible decisions is required, the boundary of its capabilities becomes tangible.

This balance is not a technical problem, but a configuration that needs to be managed. The question of exactly how to build this combination in specific areas – where the line between support and delegation is drawn – remains open. It is in this dimension that the most important discussions about the practical application of technology are centered today.
