Someone who understands the question, weighs the answer, and perhaps empathizes with the interlocutor. This feeling is natural. The human brain is evolutionarily wired to seek signs of intelligence in the world around it and to find them even where they are absent.

Anthropomorphism – attributing human qualities to inanimate objects – happens particularly easily with AI. These systems speak our language, use familiar idioms, and reproduce the structures of our reasoning. That is exactly why the line between «looking like an intellect» and «being an intellect» blurs quickly and imperceptibly.

This article is not about AI being useless or dangerous. It is about something else: a precise understanding of the nature of these systems is more important than beautiful metaphors. The words «thinking», «understanding», and «consciousness» are often used incorrectly when applied to modern models.

Defining Human Thought and Subjective Experience

Before discussing what AI lacks, it is worth clarifying the concepts themselves.

Thought, in a broad sense, is an information-processing task aimed at solving problems, formulating conclusions, and building new representations of the world. However, human thought is not reducible to data manipulation. It includes goal-setting, self-awareness, a connection to the body and emotions, and memory as a continuous narrative rather than just a bulk of records. A human thinks within the context of a situation: they are in the world; they have a history, needs, and fears. Thinking is inextricably embedded in life.

Consciousness is an even more complex concept. In philosophy and cognitive science, it describes subjective experience: what it is like to be someone. To see the color red, to feel pain, to experience curiosity. Researchers call these «qualia» – internal subjective states that cannot be fully conveyed through description. Thomas Nagel once famously asked: «What is it like to be a bat?». The point is that even a detailed description of the neural processes in an animal's brain would not allow us to know how its experience feels from the inside.

Consciousness implies the presence of a «point of view» – a subject to whom something is given in experience. Without a subject, there is no consciousness; only processes remain.

This is where the fundamental boundary lies between a human and any modern computing system.

Technical Reality of Large Language Models

Modern language models are statistical systems trained on massive amounts of text. Their task is to predict which token (a word or a fragment of one) is most likely to follow the previous ones in a given context. This, and nothing more, lies at the heart of a process that looks like «communication».

During the training process, the model does not internalize meaning. It identifies statistical dependencies between symbols, words, and phrases. The algorithm discovers that the word «capital» is often followed by the name of a city, that the question «how are you?» is usually answered with «fine», and that certain terms neighbor each other in scientific papers. From billions of such patterns emerges the ability to generate coherent and seemingly meaningful text.

No model of the world arises in the process. The system has no internal representation of what a «capital» is as a concept, why people are interested in each other's well-being, or what stands behind scientific terms. There is only a complex multi-layered structure of weights that transforms one sequence of symbols into another.

It is important to understand: this is not a critique of the technology, but a description of its architecture. A neural network does exactly what it was created for, and it does it strikingly well. But «skillfully imitating coherent speech» and «understanding» are fundamentally different things.

The Chinese Room and Symbol Processing

The Imitation of Understanding

One of the most famous thought experiments in the philosophy of mind is John Searle's «Chinese Room». Imagine a person locked in a room. Slips of paper with Chinese characters are passed to him through a slot. He has a detailed manual: when receiving a certain set of symbols, he must respond with another set. The person does not know Chinese; he is simply following rules. From the outside, it appears the room «understands» the language – the answers are correct and appropriate. But inside, there is no understanding.

Searle used this example to show that syntax (formal rules for symbol processing) does not give rise to semantics (meaningful content). A system can operate symbols correctly without having the slightest idea of their meaning.

Modern language models are, essentially, an extremely complex version of such a room. Only instead of a person with a manual, there are billions of parameters, and instead of slips of paper, there are tokens. The rules are not explicitly written down; they are extracted from data. But the principle remains unchanged: the system operates on structures without having access to what those structures point to.

When a model writes «I understand your concern» – it is not an expression of an internal state, but the reproduction of a pattern frequently encountered in training data. When it «reasons» on a complex topic – it is the unfolding of statistically probable transitions between text fragments, not the movement of thought from premises to a conclusion.

The difference lies not in the quality of the result, but in the very nature of the process.

Differences Between Biological and Artificial Neurons

Limits of the Brain Analogy

One often hears: «But a neural network is structured like a brain – neurons, connections, weights. Isn't it the same thing?»

This analogy is superficial. Artificial neural networks were indeed inspired by simplified models of biological neurons, but the similarity is limited to the metaphor.

A biological neuron is a living cell with metabolism, electrochemical processes, and a dependence on the state of the entire organism. It exists within a body that is situated in an environment, has needs, and interacts with the world through actions and their consequences. The brain does not process information in a vacuum – it regulates the behavior of a living being embedded in physical and social reality.

An artificial neuron is a mathematical function. It takes numbers as input, applies an operation to them, and passes the result to the output. There is no biochemistry, no body, and no environment. A network of such functions is a computational graph, not a living organ.

The brain forms meaning through a connection to experience: we know what «hot» is because we have been burned; we understand «loneliness» because we have felt it. A language model has never experienced anything. It has no body, no continuous existence in time, and no sensations. It does not know what «hot» is – it only knows in which contexts that word appears in texts.

Another difference is integration. The brain works as a single system where cognitive, emotional, and physiological processes are inextricably linked. A neural network is a set of operations on matrices of numbers. Between them, there is nothing but mathematics.

This does not make neural networks less useful, but it means that calling them an «electronic brain» or «artificial intelligence» is to use a metaphor where scientific rigor is required.

Brief Conclusion

Modern AI systems are an outstanding achievement of engineering. They solve tasks that until recently seemed the exclusive prerogative of humans: they write texts, analyze data, translate, program, and synthesize information. This is real value that should not be diminished.

But behind these capabilities stands neither thought, nor consciousness, nor understanding in the sense we apply those words to people. AI works with symbol patterns, probabilistic dependencies, and mathematical operations. It does not realize what it is talking about, does not live through the conversation, and possesses no point of view.

It is important to understand this not to «debunk» the technology, but to use it wisely: without excessive trust where critical verification is needed; without expecting empathy where there is none; without fear of the «awakening» of something that fundamentally has nothing to awaken from.

Precise language is the foundation of precise thinking. And when we speak of AI, it is vital to distinguish: «works as if it understands» and «actually understands».Between these phrases lies a fundamental difference.
