Not just someone who processed a query, but someone who truly grasped it: caught the meaning, considered the context, and chose the right words. This feeling is persistent and arises involuntarily. It is precisely what needs clarification – not because of its danger, but because it is misleading.
Conversational text generates a peculiar illusion. When a system produces coherent, structured, and thematically consistent speech, the brain automatically searches for its source – a subject. We are accustomed to the idea that if there is meaningful text, there must be someone speaking meaningfully. This is an intuition honed by millennia of interaction with humans, and it triggers faster than we can critically reflect upon it.
Added to this is adaptability. The model changes its tone, accounts for details from previous remarks, and adjusts its answers based on clarifications. The dynamics of dialogue reinforce the impression: we are facing something that reacts to us personally. This «something» begins to be perceived as a «someone»./p>

We attribute purpose to moving objects, see faces in the outlines of clouds, and detect resentment in a neutral intonation. This is not a thinking defect, but its baseline setting.
Cognitive science calls this tendency anthropomorphism – the attribution of human qualities to inanimate objects. It manifests more strongly the «behaviorally richer» an object is: the more actively a system responds to external stimuli, the more convincing its «inner life» seems. Language models are a powerful stimulus in this sense: they don't just react, they speak. And speech is one of the primary markers by which we identify a persona.
In parallel, the so-called «theory of mind» kicks in – the ability to attribute beliefs, desires, and intentions to other beings. This is an automatic process. We do not make a conscious decision to assume the presence of a will behind a chatbot's answer; we simply perceive the answer as coming from a subject with an internal position.
This is why the illusion is so stable. It arises not from gullibility, but because our cognitive systems are hardwired to recognize such patterns. «Coherent speech + reaction to context = subject with intentions» – this equation works automatically, and it cannot be canceled by an act of will. It can only be acknowledged.

There is a temptation here to contrast «real» thinking with «shallow» imitation. However, such a contrast is not entirely correct, and this isn't about defending the technology, but about the accuracy of definitions.
The model is not «pretending» to think. It performs operations on numerical representations of text, calculating the statistically most probable continuations depending on the context. This is a complex, multi-level procedure, the result of which is often striking. But an «impressive result» and «thinking» are not synonyms.
Thinking in the human sense includes components that are structurally absent in modern systems. First, there is goal-setting – the ability to form one's own goals that are not externally defined. A language model has no goals, only a task: to complete a sequence of tokens. Second, there is reflection – the ability not just to provide an answer, but to be aware of the process of its creation, to evaluate it, and to doubt it. Third, there is causal reasoning: not searching for correlations in data, but understanding the mechanisms of why one thing follows from another.
When a model builds a line of reasoning, it reproduces its form – the logical structure characteristic of argumentation, since those are the patterns found in its training data. This does not mean the content is false – it is often correct – but the mechanism of its generation is fundamentally different.
In other words, the imitation of intelligent behavior and the presence of intelligence as such are not different degrees of the same phenomenon, but processes of a different nature. One can be observed from the outside, the other is accessible only from within.
Data Processing vs Subjective Experience in Language Models

Here we arrive at the most subtle yet fundamental distinction.
There is a vast difference between processing data and subjectively experiencing it. When a person reads about the loss of a loved one, an internal response occurs – not just the recognition of words, but empathy or resonance. This state has a subjective dimension: there is someone for whom this experience means something.
In the philosophy of mind, this is called «qualia» – the subjective character of experience. Not just an informational state, but «what it is like» to be in it. Pain is not just a signal of tissue damage; pain is the sensation of suffering itself. It is this subjective «how» that forms the basis of what we call experience.
A language model lacks this «how».It processes tokens, updates weights, and generates a continuation. This is a colossal computational effort, and its results can be substantive and useful, but there is no subjective experience behind them. Inside the system, there is no observer for whom anything is happening.
That is why the distinction between information processing and understanding is not technical, but categorical. Understanding presupposes the existence of a subject. Processing does not. When a model «understands» a query, it translates it into a numerical representation and performs operations on it. When a person understands a question, something becomes clear «for them».And this «for them» is the key link.
Consequently, the illusion of intelligence is, first and foremost, an illusion of agency. We observe intelligent behavior and automatically assume the presence of a personality. But behavior and agency are not identical: you can have the former without the latter.
A Sober Approach: What It Means to Understand the Nature of the Illusion
Recognizing the nature of this illusion does not devalue the technology; rather, it allows us to interact with it more effectively.
The illusion of intelligence arises naturally. On one side are human cognitive systems, tuned to search for agents and intentions; on the other are statistical models capable of generating coherent and adaptive text. The combined effect of these factors is stronger than each of them individually. It is stable, reproducible, and is not a sign of user naivety.
A sober position here lies not in skepticism or excitement, but in the precision of perception.
The model does not think, but it can help a human think. It does not understand, but it can organize information so that it becomes easier to understand. It has no intentions, but its behavior can be managed through skillful prompting. It is a tool with an unusual property: when working with it, a sense of dialogue arises. This feeling is real, but it does not prove that there is a conversational partner on the other end.
The feeling of sapience is a signal from our perception, not a description of objective reality. Like any signal, it carries information: that the model is well-calibrated and its response is appropriate. However, this signal is not evidence of a subject. Distinguishing between these two levels means not only having a better grasp of AI, but also a deeper understanding of ourselves.
