Seriously: without a shadow of a doubt, he assumed I was genuinely happy about a sleepless night before a project submission. And in that moment, I realized: he didn't just miss the sarcasm — he didn't even suspect it existed.
We live in an era when artificial intelligence can write an essay, compose a poem, and explain quantum physics in simple words. But ask him to understand that «fine» sometimes means «terrible», and he gets lost like a tourist without a map in the maze of an old city. For AI, sarcasm is a dark forest where every word says one thing but implies something completely different.
When words lie and meaning hides
Sarcasm is the art of speaking in reverse. It's when you say «wonderful», roll your eyes, and everyone around you understands — you mean a disaster. It is a subtle game between the literal meaning of words and what actually hides behind intonation, context, facial expressions, and the general atmosphere of the conversation.

But for him, all these «greats» exist as separate islands of data, unconnected by a single emotional current.
When I write «great» with sincere delight, my brain activates a whole network of associations: memories of pleasant events, anticipation of joy, a feeling of lightness. When I write the same word with sarcasm, a different network turns on: memories of disappointments, fatigue from failures, defensive irony as a way to cope with negativity. ChatGPT has no access to these networks. He sees only letters on a screen.

He doesn't know that the user is tired, that they are in a bad mood, that this phrase is part of a long story of disappointments. For a neural network, every conversation starts with a clean slate on which there is no invisible ink of past experience.
Irony requires complexity that isn't in the code
Sarcasm is a cognitively complex thing. To understand it, the brain must simultaneously hold two contradictory meanings in mind: the literal meaning of words and their true intention. It's like a quantum state where one particle exists in two places at once until you make a measurement.
Psychologists call this «Theory of Mind» — the ability to understand that other people have their own thoughts, intentions, and beliefs which may differ from the literal meaning of their words. But for now, when I write something sarcastic to ChatGPT and he replies with sincere seriousness, I feel a strange comfort. It reminds me that human communication is a miracle assembled from millions of invisible details. And that this miracle still belongs only to us.
